Narrow-leaved plantain, West Virginia

Identification: Several varieties found across the United States. Leaves are in a basal whorl; flower stem height may reach 8”–10”. The difference is in the leaves: P. major leaves are broad, ovate; P. lanceolata leaves are long, narrow, and lance shaped.

Habitat: Nationwide in open ground, wasteland, edges of fields and roads, and lawns. Locate P. maritima in the upper tidal zone, often stem-deep in water at high tide.

Food: In the spring pluck whole leaves and chop them into salads, or sauté with wild leeks, nettles, and watercress. Tear out the tough midleaf vein (rib) from summer and autumn leaves before adding to salads.
